Why Did We Develop The HRPB AI Maturity Model?
After recognizing the gaps in AI adoption and seeing the untapped potential of AI in HR circles, Pioneer created this groundbreaking model to empower leaders to benchmark their current AI capabilities and chart a course towards maturity. There is nothing like the HRBP AI Maturity Model available on the market today—this unique solution enables organizations to navigate their AI journey and overcome challenges with unprecedented clarity and impact.
To develop this model, we engaged in extensive conversations with HR Business Partners to understand their current state and needs. We then extrapolated this information to develop a holistic view of maturity for HRBPs. Our goal was to create a tool that would help HRBPs understand where they are and take actionable steps to advance through the model, ultimately supporting the businesses they serve.
The Five Levels of the HRBP AI Maturity Model
Our model was designed to assess where HRPBs currently fit along the spectrum of AI adoption. There are five stages and they are defined as follows:
- Initial Awareness: At this stage, HRBPs have limited knowledge of AI, primarily gained from reading about it. They rarely use AI in HR systems and are likely falling behind the competition.
- Example: Sarah, an HRBP at this level, is a reluctant resistor who might struggle with prioritizing daily tasks and providing her leader strategic support since she is bogged down in the weeds. She spends a lot of time on manual data entry and basic administrative tasks, feeling overwhelmed by the volume of work.
- Basic Exploration: HRBPs begin to study AI more seriously and experiment with it in stand-alone HR systems or other AI tools. They start with the basics, such as updating interview guides and job descriptions for AI.
- Example: John, an HRBP at this level, is a cautious evaluator and starts using AI tools to write job descriptions and some email communications. He is beginning to see the potential of AI to streamline his work but is still in the early stages of adoption.
- Developing Competence: HRBPs regularly use AI within all HR systems, including custom bots and other AI tools, to research and solve problems. They define AI competencies and incorporate them into talent frameworks.
- Example: Emily, an HRBP at this level, is a steady adopter and uses AI to analyze employee engagement surveys and identify trends. She is becoming more comfortable with AI and is starting to make data-driven decisions.
- Advanced Integration: AI is integrated into daily work whenever and wherever possible. HRBPs become masters at prompting, teaching, and modeling AI use.
- Example: Michael, an HRBP at this level, is a rapid adopter and uses AI to predict employee turnover and develop retention strategies. He is proficient in using AI tools and is seen as a go-to resource for AI-related questions within his organization.
- Strategic Leader: HRBPs shift to being AI guides for businesses, understanding the AI roadmap, and setting strategic talent plans accordingly. They influence at the enterprise level by embedding AI into organizational culture while protecting what needs to stay human.
- Example: Jessica, an HRBP at this level, is an AI pioneer and is an expert in advising the business leaders she supports on the people impacts of AI against their business strategies. She uses AI to drive bottom-line growth and is involved in high-level strategic planning and decision-making.
