Background
Organizations are increasingly seeking innovative methods to interact with their data in the age of generative AI. They want to pose data questions, create visualizations, and generate reports using plain English—not code. These capabilities automate the discovery of business insights and empower leaders to make data-informed decisions. Microsoft Fabric and Copilot offer several methods to achieve this, some of which are currently available, while others will be released soon with varying pricing options. This post examines how generative AI integrates with data in Fabric and Copilot.
1.Copilot in Fabric = $5K/Month
There are a few different ways organizations that use Fabric can leverage AI for data consumers and creators. The primary tools are Copilot for Power BI, AI Skills, and Copilot for Fabric.
Note: To use any of these features, you must have an F64+ or Premium capacity, which starts at $5,000/month (see Fabric pricing).
Copilot for Power BI
Copilot for Power BI enhances the data analysis experience by acting as an integrated chatbot within the Power BI interface, providing a unified, AI-enhanced view of data. This feature allows users to interact with their data more dynamically, offering functionalities such as report generation, report summarization, and an interactive Q&A feature directly with the data.
AI Skills
AI Skills is a feature within Fabric that empowers data practitioners to create AI-powered Q&A chatbots for interacting with data stored in Fabric lakehouses and warehouses. This capability enhances data interaction by allowing users to ask questions in natural language and obtain accurate, data-driven responses.
Copilot for Fabric
Copilot in Fabric provides intelligent code completion, natural language-to-SQL translation, and automated insights within the Data Science, Data Engineering, Data Factory, Data Warehouse, and Real-Time Intelligence modules.
2.Fabric in Copilot = Coming Soon
The ability to integrate Fabric data into Microsoft Copilot 365 is coming soon, according to Microsoft. The data will be integrated via Microsoft Graph Data Connectors for Copilot Agents built in Copilot Studio. Microsoft Copilot for 365 is $30/user/month, which includes access to Copilot Studio (see plan details).
Copilot users will see Agents in the sidebar, which will soon be able to incorporate Fabric data.
3.Azure AI Foundry = Custom Development
Azure AI Foundry is an integrated platform designed for developers and IT administrators to build, customize, and manage AI applications and agents. It offers a comprehensive set of AI capabilities and tools through a unified SDK and APIs, facilitating secure data integration, model customization, and enterprise-grade governance. Additionally, Fabric data stored in OneLake can be seamlessly integrated into Azure AI Foundry, providing another layer of AI integration and data analysis capabilities.
